The main driver information needs to reflect reality. If a lower-risk person is named as the main driver while somebody else actually uses the car most, insurers can treat that as fronting.
What fronting means
Fronting is commonly associated with a parent or experienced driver taking out a policy in their own name while a younger or higher-risk person is actually the main driver. The issue is not that families share cars. The issue is whether the application gives a misleading picture of who uses the vehicle most and who should properly be treated as the main driver.
Why insurers care
The identity of the main driver is part of the risk assessment. Age, driving experience, licence history and expected use can all influence price and acceptance. If the person presented as the main driver is not really the main user, the insurer may have been given information that affected its decision to offer the policy.
What can happen if fronting is discovered
A claim may be investigated closely and the insurer may take action under the policy terms and relevant law. Depending on the circumstances, this can include reducing or refusing a claim, cancelling or voiding cover and recording information that may need to be disclosed in future applications. Deliberate fraud can have more serious consequences.
What if it was not deliberate?
Some families genuinely misunderstand the difference between policyholder, registered keeper, owner and main driver. If you realise that the policy may not reflect the actual use of the car, do not simply wait until renewal. Contact the insurer, explain the position accurately and ask what information it needs. Keep a note of the conversation or written response.
How to describe shared use honestly
If several people use a vehicle, estimate who drives it most and for what purposes. A named driver can still use the car regularly, but the application should not be arranged around whichever description produces the cheapest quote. If usage is genuinely close, ask the insurer how it wants the main driver identified.
Getting cover after a fronting problem
If a previous policy was cancelled or voided because of fronting, future applications may ask questions about cancellation, voidance or previous insurance difficulties. Answer exactly what is asked and use the wording from the previous insurer if possible. The next application should be based on the genuine current main driver and accurate vehicle use.
