My Car Is Not Recognised When I Try to Get an Insurance Quote

A quotation system failing to recognise the car does not necessarily mean it cannot be insured. It may be a vehicle-data problem rather than an underwriting refusal.

Do not choose a different model just to continue. Check the registration and exact specification, then contact the provider if the vehicle needs to be identified manually.

Why vehicles sometimes fail to appear

Newly registered cars, imports, private registrations, unusual trim levels and database delays can all cause a registration lookup to fail. A vehicle may also appear under a slightly different manufacturer or model description from the one used by the seller.

Check the registration first

A simple typing mistake is common. Confirm every letter and number and remember that zero and the letter O can be confused. If the vehicle has just received a registration mark or a private plate, database updates may not be immediate.

Use the exact vehicle specification

If the site allows manual selection, choose the true manufacturer, model, body style, engine and trim. Do not select the nearest-looking car simply to get a price. Small specification differences can matter to value, performance and repair cost.

Imports and conversions need extra care

An imported vehicle, camper conversion or specialist model may not exist in mainstream databases at all. Gather the VIN, import information, engine details and registration documents. Some providers may need to identify the car outside the standard online process.

Modifications can be separate from recognition

Even when the base model is recognised, aftermarket changes still need to be declared where required. Do not assume that a registration lookup automatically tells the insurer about wheels, suspension, bodywork, engine changes or other modifications.

If comparison websites cannot quote

Try to establish whether the problem is the vehicle record or the insurer’s acceptance criteria. If the registration is not recognised anywhere, correct the data issue first. If the car is recognised but providers decline it, the vehicle may simply fall outside mainstream underwriting rules.
