Why Is My Imported Car Difficult to Insure?

Imported cars can be harder to place because insurers may have less familiar data about specification, parts, repair costs and vehicle value.

Have the exact import type, model, engine, registration status and modifications ready. A standard comparison form may not contain enough information for every imported vehicle.

Why imports can fall outside standard rules

Mainstream underwriting systems are built around vehicles commonly sold in the UK. An import may have a specification, engine, trim level or security arrangement that is not easily matched to the usual vehicle database. That can lead to no quote even when the vehicle itself is perfectly legal.

Grey and parallel imports are not identical

A grey import is generally a vehicle brought in from outside the usual European market, while a parallel import is a model built for another European market. Insurers can treat them differently because specifications, parts availability and repair costs may differ.

Prepare the technical details

Know the manufacturer, exact model designation, engine size, year, country of origin and whether the vehicle has been modified since manufacture. If it has passed any required approval or registration process, keep the documents. Vague descriptions make an unusual car harder to assess.

Modifications need particular care

Imports are sometimes sold with aftermarket wheels, suspension, bodywork or performance changes already fitted. Do not assume a feature is standard simply because you bought the vehicle that way. If you are unsure, compare the car with the manufacturer’s original specification or seek specialist help identifying changes.

Why a comparison site may show nothing

The problem may be the data available to the providers rather than your personal driving record. Some insurers simply do not quote for certain imports through automated systems. If the registration or exact model cannot be identified, a provider may need the vehicle details manually.

Before buying an imported car

If possible, investigate cover before committing to the purchase. A desirable import at an attractive price can become expensive if only a small number of insurers are prepared to cover it. Obtain the registration and full specification in advance and be wary of missing modification information.
