Do not substitute a right-hand-drive version on the quotation form. Give the actual specification and import status so the insurer can decide whether it fits its rules.
Left-hand drive is not automatically a barrier
Many left-hand-drive vehicles are legally used on UK roads. The difficulty is that insurers have different appetites for vehicles that were not built primarily for the UK market. Some may quote normally, some may charge differently and others may not offer cover.
Import status is often part of the issue
A left-hand-drive car may also be a parallel or grey import. That can affect parts availability, specification data and valuation. Make sure you know where the vehicle came from and whether it differs from a UK-market model with the same name.
Visibility and use can be considered
Driving position can affect visibility in some situations, particularly overtaking on roads designed around right-hand-drive vehicles. Insurers set their own criteria for how they treat that. The important point for the driver is to disclose the actual steering position and vehicle type.
Repair costs can differ
Headlamps, mirrors, dashboard parts and other components may not be identical to UK-market versions. If parts need to be sourced abroad, claim costs can change. That is another reason some mainstream providers may not accept the risk through an online form.
If the website cannot identify the vehicle
Do not force the quote by choosing a similar right-hand-drive model. Use the registration if it is recognised, or contact the provider with the VIN and specification if necessary. Incorrect vehicle identification can create much bigger problems at claim time.
Check cover before buying if possible
If you are considering a left-hand-drive vehicle, obtain realistic quotations first. The purchase price may look attractive, but a limited insurer market can change the overall cost of ownership. Make sure any modifications and import details are included in that check.
